Diesel Particulate Filters (more commonly known as DPF's) have been fitted to diesel cars for nearly 20 years. A DPF is a filter that captures and stores exhaust soot in order to reduce emissions from diesel cars. Because it is a filter, there is a finite capacity and this soot needs to be burned off, something known as 'regeneration'. There are two principle types of regeneration, passive and active and these differ it terms of how the process is conducted, but they both rely on temperatures being high enough to burn off the excess soot, this is normally completed during motorway driving or in the case of active regeneration driving in excess of 40mph for around 10 minutes. The other type of regeneration is 'forced'.
Forced is typically required where a vehicle is driven mainly in urban and city areas and does not have the opportunity to burn off this excess soot and will often result in a vehicle going into a limp mode and a visit to the garage. A forced regeneration involves the garage using a computer program to run the car, initiating a regeneration of the DPF. This will also require changing the engine oil & oil filter. If this is not successful and based on the severity of the problem the DPF may require a deep clean or replacement. Cleaning is a relatively inexpensive process but can only be used on those DPF's with a relatively minor issue and is not always successful. It may also only be a short-term fix. It is worth remembering that DPF problems are more likely to occur with vehicles that have not been regularly serviced. In a vehicle that has been well maintained the DPF should last at least 100,000 miles. It is also important that you use the correct oil because some oils contain additives that can actually block filters.
If your DPF light comes on then your manufacturers handbook should provide advice for your particular model. It should be possible for you to start a manual regeneration by driving for 20 minutes or so on a motorway at around 60mph. This should clear the DPF warning light within the first 200 miles or so. The success of this process is entirely dependent on how blocked your DPF is.
Other symptoms of a blocked DPF may include; a loss of powers, the automatic stop-start system is no longer working, the cooling fans are running longer than normal and/or poor fuel economy.
It is possible to remove your DPF? However, if caught, owners could face fines of up to £1,000 on cars and it may invalidate your insurance policy. In addition, if this is discovered during an MOT, your car will fail the test. Be wary if anyone advising this as a potential solution to your DPF problems.
As the price of DPF's have fallen dramatically we would typically recommend replacing the filter. This should then provide trouble free service for another 100,000 miles or so, as long as the car is regularly services and passive or active regeneration is allowed to happen. Even a deep clean that works may only provide temporary respite and, in the long run, it is likely you well get better value for money by replacing your DPF. Whatever the issue, speak to us and we will provide appropriate advice based on your experience, driving styles and vehicle.

The key to reliable motoring is a good maintenance regime and dealing with issues before they become expensive. All vehicles are subject to wear and tear and an MOT only covers the legal minimum standard for the road and, inevitably, it does not cover everything on your vehicle. Early, pre-emptive repairs can often prevent much larger expenses later or a complete failure. Whether you have a family vehicle, business vehicle or operate a fleet, we will be more than happy to maintain your vehicle or vehicles.
We can complete any of the following;
We can complete retrofits on most mechanical or electrical parts. Let us know what you need
For fleet operators we can, subject to negotiations, keep a selection of routine maintenance parts 'on the shelf' such as mirrors, bulbs, batteries etc.
