Even with a well maintained car which is regularly serviced faults will develop. Here at Grease Monkey Garage in Cheddar we are familiar with these issues and can complete repairs quickly and at a price that will relieve some of the stress. We have invested in the tools and have the experience to deal with all mechanical repairs. Listed below are a few of the most common faults you may experience not related to what may be regarded as routine or scheduled maintenance such as brakes, shock absorbers, cambelts etc..
The symptoms are likely to include at least some of the following; jerky acceleration, poor fuel economy, your engine will sound rough when idling and what is often described as a rotten egg smell. This is normally caused when when the sensors are overcome by carbon or other deposits. It may be possible to flush the system with a catalytic converter cleaner but, if this doesn't work then the sensors will need to be replaced.
Mass Air Flow Sensor
This problem may exhibit similar symptoms to the Oxygen Sensor but there will be other clues including; difficulty starting the engine, jerky acceleration, the engine sounds as if it is having hiccups or it may stall frequently, particularly once is has been first started.
The sensor resides within the air filter unit and may just need cleaning. Perhaps it would be a good time to consider a full service? Failing which the sensor can be replaced which not a particularly expensive operation.
EGR Valve Replacement
The Exhaust Gas Recirculation Valve (EGR) works by recirculating exhaust gases back into the engine to reduce cylinder temperatures and help reduce emissions. As a consequence it can get very dirty and often requires a good clean.
Common symptoms of a fault EGR Valve include; the engine sounding rough when idling, the 'check engine' light may be on or you may be experiencing a reduction in efficiency, power and/or acceleration.
The first option will be an attempt to clean the EGR valve, if this doesn't work, then a replacement is required. Once again this should not break the bank.
EVAP Purge Control Valve
This is part of the system that help to control the amount of fuel vapours in the fuel tank by trapping excess vapour using a charcoal lined chamber. The Purge Control Valve allows the vapour to be vented into the engine to be burned up with the rest of the fuel thereby reducing emissions and improving fuel economy. If the valve sticks or fails then the fuel vapours will not be correctly vented. This may become apparent with the following symptoms, the check engine light may be illuminated or the car may struggle to start, especially after a re-fuelling stop.
With the EVAP Purge Control Valve we will normally recommend replacement given the alternatives are likely to be more expensive and may not resolve the issue.
Inlet Manifold Gasket
A leaking gasket, whatever the cause, is something that can't be ignored and should be dealt with quickly given a complete failure could lead to a catastrophic failure of the engine and a bill in the thousands. Symptoms of a potential issue include coolant leaks, reduced fuel economy, an overheating engine and maybe engine misfires. This is a fairly routine repair requiring the removal of the head, most likely a skim and a new gasket fitted. Prices start at around £150.
This is a relatively small and inexpensive component but, nonetheless, a very important one. Failure to address issues with the thermostat could quickly lead to more serious engine problems and should not be ignored. Typical symptoms of a faulty thermostat will be the engine gets too hot, too quickly or it overheats. Conversely, the engine may take a long time to heat. If you are experiencing any of these symptoms, its time to book your car into Grease Monkey Garage in Cheddar. Replacements are not particularly expensive and, in any event, far less than the costs associated with ignoring the issue.
The spark plugs are essentially controlled by the Ignition Coil and, therefore, it is an essential component if you want your vehicle to function correctly. If the coil fails it can cause other issues such as damaging the catalytic convertor which is quite a costly repair! Symptoms of a failing or failed ignition coil will likely include; misfiring or backfiring, poor fuel economy, a lack of power, stalling and the engine 'spluttering'. On the scale of items that could go wrong this is not an expensive repair and should be addressed without delay. Ignition coils will need replaced alongside the spark plugs.

We appreciate that the terminology used by different manufacturers to describe their vehicle service schedules can be a touch confusing. Our aim is to steer you in the right direction. Most manufacturer will provide a schedule for each type of service and we would recommend that you keep to these schedules, even in your vehicle is out of warranty. The latter will involve following the manufacturers schedule and specification in terms of service and parts. This type of service is essential if your vehicle is within the manufacturer’s warranty period.
But don’t worry, we will go through the various options available to you based on your needs, those of the vehicle, any specific manufacturer requirements and, of course, your budget. We can also offer a brake fluid service, air conditioning service and scheduled cambelt changes.

The key to reliable motoring is a good maintenance regime and dealing with issues before they become expensive. All vehicles are subject to wear and tear and an MOT only covers the legal minimum standard for the road and, inevitably, it does not cover everything on your vehicle. Early, pre-emptive repairs can often prevent much larger expenses later or a complete failure. Whether you have a family vehicle, business vehicle or operate a fleet, we will be more than happy to maintain your vehicle or vehicles.
We can complete any of the following;
We can complete retrofits on most mechanical or electrical parts. Let us know what you need
For fleet operators we can, subject to negotiations, keep a selection of routine maintenance parts 'on the shelf' such as mirrors, bulbs, batteries etc.
